With the new QAPI standards in the Requirements of Participation, managing incontinence magnifies for multiple reasons. They include:

• While the article does not mention it specifically, there are times where Safe Patient Handling equipment is needed to safely and effectively toilet residents
• Infection Prevention is part of this scenario and while training to become continent again, equipment must be properly cleaned.
• One of the primary reasons individuals become incontinent is due to the difficulty of using the toilet. Equipment can help mitigate against this.

Lastly, the ‘Quality of Life’ aspect of the Requirements of Participation, makes this an important subject to address.
